- The world's first atomic bomb, codenamed the "Trinity" test, was detonated on July 16, 1945 in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, in the United States.
- Apollo 11, the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon, was launched on July 16, 1969, with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins on board.
- In 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister Lauren Bessette died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. The plane, a Piper Saratoga aircraft, was piloted by Kennedy himself.
