History of World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day began in 1992, launched by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), an inclusive organization established in 1948 with representatives and contacts across more than 150 nations worldwide. The introduction of this annual activity was the brainchild of the then Deputy Secretary General of WFMH, Richard Hunter.

The initial years witnessed resistance as the principal hurdle was the global community’s lack of understanding and information about mental health. Regardless, WFMH persisted in its mission to enlighten the world about the seriousness of mental health issues. Gradually, it gained substantial acknowledgment for its brave initiative.

During the first two years, World Mental Health Day didn't have a specific theme, other than promoting mental health in general and educating the public. However, starting from 1994, the day has been celebrated with a theme. The initial theme was "Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World".

Since then, each edition of World Mental Health Day addresses a unique theme that touches upon various dimensions of mental health. In 2000, for example, the focus was "Mental Health and Work". More recently, themes have revolved around 'Mental Health and Older Adults' (2013), 'Mental Health and Suicide Prevention' (2019), and 'Mental Health is a universal human right' (2023).

Over the years, World Mental Health day has been pivotal in drawing attention to the disconcerting statistics surrounding mental health, advocating against social stigma related to mental health, and pushing for better accessibility and higher-quality mental health care globally.

This day celebrates innovations in the field of mental health, shares stories of triumph and recovery, and highlights recommendations for further improvement and accessibility. Most importantly, it has played a role in breaking the silence around mental health, sparking conversations on topics considered taboo earlier. Currently, World Mental Health Day is marked in more than 100 countries globally.
