This event is a platform for drone enthusiasts and professionals to share their experiences, display cutting-edge advancements, advocate for safe drone use, and educate the public on the beneficial impacts of drone technology.

This day unites everyone involved in this fascinating world to highlight the limitless opportunities and potentials presented by drones.

History of International Drone Day

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have a rich history spanning more than a century. The concept of drones emerged in the late 19th century when Nikola Tesla developed the first pilotless aircraft called the “Aerial Target.” However, it wasn’t until World War I that drones gained significant attention.

The modern era of drones began in the 1980s as remote-controlled vehicles gained popularity. Israel played a crucial role in advancing drone technology with their UAVs like the “Drone Pioneer” and “Hermes” that were primarily used for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes.

Fast forward to the 2000s, improvements in technology and component miniaturization made drones more affordable and versatile. Boeing’s “ScanEagle” and General Atomics’ “Predator” and “Reaper” drones became pivotal in military operations, seeing extensive use in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Simultaneously, drones gained traction in recreational and civilian fields. The Chinese manufacturer DJI led the way by providing affordable and user-friendly drones for consumer use. Drones found applications in aerial photography, videography, agriculture, search and rescue missions, package delivery, and entertainment.

Initiated on March 14, 2015, International Drone Day is the brainchild of David Oneal and Sarah Oneal, hosts of “That Drone Show.” With substantial backing from the drone community, the event was set up to shed light on the positive ways drones are used in our society.

Since then, the event has grown from strength to strength each year. Enthusiasts globally organize a variety of activities, ranging from drone exhibitions and demonstrations to races and classes. Its tagline, “drones are good,” encapsulates the essence of the event and the numerous advantages of drones, such as their use in wildlife conservation, firefighting, and search and rescue operations, among others.
